This family came to us looking for a way to create a new family entertainment space in what was an attic. They wanted the main space to be a comfortable space for a family movie or a college football Saturday with friends, while also providing a kitchenette, a powder room, and a second stair access. We carved out every bit of usable space to create an open flowing space flooded with natural light. To avoid using much of the square footage on a traditional stair we proposed the custom ships ladder that provided a more minimal floor to floor penetration and it also provided the opportunity to create a small additional lofted space. The space is washed with light from the new windows and amplified by the white walls and natural stained floors. Painted walls transition to a white washed tongue and groove vaulted ceiling illuminated by directional up-lights and a large circular monorail light fixture. These elements combine to provide this family a functional and enjoyable space that makes it hard to believe it was once an attic.
